Гвардия (Guards) - an exclusive privileged part of armies. It's not quite same like Royal Guard. Initially in Red Army honorary title of Guardsman (Гвардеец) was individual reward for personal heroism and courage display. This title was added to a military rank: Guardian Red Army man/soldier (or "soldier of Guards") - Гвардии красноармеец, Guardian lieutenant ("lieutenant of Guards") - гвардии лейтенант, also everyone was awarded by a badge (Гвардия). The soldier could be the Guardsman, but his companion in arms or the commander - wasn't. Haven't deserved yet. It was very honorable. But later this rank began to distribute for mass heroism to some military units, companies etc. and absolutely all servicemen of them becomes guardsmen automatically (and cowards and weaklings - are too). It was not correct and after the wwII this title ceased to be honorable - was become hackneyed
