Received this lovely example of an EAME campaign medal today.
For those looking for one of these for their own collections, note on this example how well defined the netting is on the soldiers helmets and uniforms, the circle the "W" on the back under the eagle, and the lack of black enhancement wash you expect to see on the later restrikes. The dies they used to strike these were pretty worn out when they used them once again for restrikes decades later, which made the restrikes have a worn coin look. Much of the detail was lost on these later versions, hence the black wash enhancement you see on them used to enhance what detail is left. Earlier examples like the one below, will not exhibit this, and will show the crisper details you see here. Both originals and restrikes will have that watery sheen on the ribbon, but the original examples will have a shorter ribbon with slightly deeper coloring. Restrikes will also have flat, bagged packaging instead of the boxing shown here.
