I received this medal yesterday, and am concerned with finding cast marks on the sides. Weren't these die struck? Is this medal bad?
Thanks in advance.

Looking at the design and the style and depth of sculpting my thought would be that these were cast rather than struck...but that is my guess rather than opinion based on knowledge of this medal.

Thank you for the reply. I wonder if you might be correct. The obverse looks good to me, and it "feels right" in my hand. I know they were originally produced in London before being produced by the Paris Mint. This medal does not have the Paris mint marks on the reverse.
IMO the other pointer to a cast manufacture is the ribbon mount style which looks as though it is cast as part of the medal and I don't think would be possible to produce with a die.

Hello Paul
I think it's a "private-made"
take a look here:

If you have a doubt, I can show it on the french forum

Hello Didier,
Thank you for your reply. I clicked on the link and tried to follow the discussion. I have to use Google translate, as I don't speak French
What does private made mean? Is it authentic, and made by a smaller manufacturer than the Paris mint? Marie Stuart or Arthus Bertrand?
Thank you,
Paul

Hello Paul
it means that it's a private purchase and the maker is unknown
this medal is genuine, IMO..... no trouble

I very much like the look of it myself. I would have no problem with this medal in my collection.
