My greatest fear is that one day I will die and my wife will sell my guns for what I told her I paid for them

I'm starting to learn how to do this as well. One place you can start it The National Archives NARA - AAD - Main Page which will give you basic enlistment information. Through The National Archives you can also request some more detailed military records but I've not gone thoruhg that process yet.
https://familysearch.org/ can also be valuable in finding birth and death records which can potentially lead to an obituary which will often times includes some information on their military experience. I know some members also use ancestry.com but I have not signed up for that yet.
Good luck!

A search on NARA for Arthur Petit returns 7 individuals, one of which is an Arthur J. Petit from Massachusetts who was drafted in July 1944. His serial Number is 31417561.
No problem! Glad you could find him. Good luck with the rest of your research!

No problem Michael! Glad I could be of service. It's a great feeling having an item and being able to identify the individual. Even if it is just his enlistment record.
According to his enlistment record he was from Hampden Massachusetts and Holyoke Massachusetts is a couple towns over. It states his enlistment was in Springfield Massachusetts and Springfield is in between the Hampden and Holyoke. They all pretty much boarder each other.
