Default Post WW2 British army question.

Sorry if this is not quite ww2 but rather 1950.
My Father was drafted to do national service in 1950 and was posted to NI for some of his time.
Were there any medals given to draftees, ie the Defence Medal ? he did not show me any if he was given one.
    Just wondering, many thanks.

    Some info here:

As NI is part of the UK, he was never posted abroad.

Thanks Men and an interesting link which says.......
There is no official British medal specifically for those who performed a period of National Service and there are no plans to institute one.

I think this is the reason. Quote:

In the case of the estimated two million people who were conscripted into the Armed Forces in the post-war years, those who did take part in campaigns or operations for which medals were subsequently awarded, had an equal right to receive them as did their Regular colleagues. Conversely, those who spent their National Service in the UK or with the British Army of the Rhine did so alongside Regular personnel who, likewise, did not receive a medal.

The answer to the question is yes, National Servicemen were entitled to the same medals as everyone else in the British Army at the time. For the most part though, it is unlikely they would have received any as there were very few medals being issued at the time. The Defence Medal was issued for service in 1939-45 only.

    Was there a NI clasp?

    Kind Regards,

    Andy

    Edit:
Yes there was, but much later than 1950.

No, there was never a Northern Ireland bar for the General Service Medal, and there were no clasps issued for it at all. In all, there were 16 bars authorised for this award.

Thanks Gents seems like a bit of an unfair deal to those who did their service, esp as the cold war was in swing and the troubbles in NI had already raised its head.
