My Grand father WW1 vet:
Chester L. Smith Pvt. F.C.
26th Division 102 co. L (2nd CT NG)
July 11, 1917 to March 3, 1919
Have found his existing awards stored away, no uniform:
DSC bar only
CDG with bronze star medal with ribbon, no bar
Victory Medal with defense sector clasp
VFW veterans medal
Silver discharge pin
40/8 medal
two wound stripes converted in 1934 to Purple Heart with oak leaf cluster
three overseas service stripes
Awards card says:
Victory medal with defense sector clasp
Purple Heart with oak leaf cluster 1934
discharge paper say he saw action:
Chemin Des Dames
Schiezeprey ? Spelling
Chateau Thierry
Wounded in action:
Chemin Des Dames (gassed)
Chateau Thierry (lost his leg ended his battle experience July 23, 1918)
He is not on the roll for DSC...but somehow he has the bar??
All in all I wonder what awards are correct...As I see it he should have:
WW1 Victory Medal with Champagne-Marne, Aisne-Marne and Defense sector clasps
Purple Heart with Oak leaf cluster
Wound veterans silver Discharge pin
Croix De Guerre with bronze star
How can I find out about the CDG?
DSC ?
He mentioned in a letter in 1978 that he was sited for meritorious service by G.O. #31 March 1918 but did not receive the awards...
How can I see G.O. #31 to see what was mentioned? was it his DSC? who knows....
Any help would be appreciated...Elliott
