1915 Mills bomb

Article about: Very nice! Did it arrive defused or did you spend a nerve wracking afternoon with a toothpick?

    Default 1915 Mills bomb

I 'inherited' a Mills bomb a few years ago and can remember it around my folks' house since the early 70's. Was going to post a pic and see if it looked genuine ww2, not that I imagined there were copies around back then. Closer inspection shows a date of 10/15 stamped into the base. Not WW2! A bit of excited googling shows that aluminium plugs are unusual. The base has stamped: No5.I 10/15 DF Co. I've got as far as this being the Dudley Foundry Co but the only example I can find on the net is a brass plug. The grenade is immaculate, hence my thoughts of ww2 or post war. Will post pics tomorrow. How unusual is it, or not? Not my area!

    Hi Ian.

You do see more brass and zinc plugs. The Mills No.5 was developed in 1915.
It sounds like you have a very nice early grenade..........

Thanks Steve, excellent links, hadn't found those in the wee small hours. I've added pics now and it does seem very early. Thanks!

Thanks for the feedback, It's one of those things that was always around since childhood so is familiar and not important. Things I dig up or buy now I examine closely. Until I took the time to use my eyes I thought it might be a repro. It was a late night on t'interporn when I saw the date. The only other 'great' war item I've got is a German shell made in Karlesruhe, bought because it was very cheap nad the town my late brother's German girlfriend came from.

Excellent condition ! - It may not seem all that important, but it's a great piece
of WWI history - with family connections too. Would be a welcome addition
    to any grenade collection.........
    Regards,

    Steve.
