I've held this casing for quite a while, and would like to know a bit more about the symbols! (perhaps showing in what weapon it was used, does the anchor mean naval cannon?)

It looks like a cut-down Bofors 40mm shell case, the neck of the case should taper. Full dimensions would be 310mm X 62mm. I can't comment whether yours was naval, but when I was in air defence in the early 70's, we used the Bofors L 40/70 - and the Navy had the 40/60. My uncle served on the Bofors 40mm during the 39-45 war, and I'm fairly sure that it was only referred to as the Bofors 40mm. The gun on the firing point at Todendorf is from 'A' Troop, 9(Plassey)Battery. I've included a shot of the Battery insignia which was affixed to all our guns and vehicles.
huh, interesting - both on the casing and your own part in the service. Cheers for your excellent answer!
