    I think you will find that this is the base of a flare case. I believe that 27mm is the standard size for a flare pistol.

    I have one flare case ... but it is longer ... this looks like shotgun case
    other flare case is aluminium this is not and it has magnetic bottom...

    this one is brass and not magnetic ...

    Could be the driving charge for a large caliber mortar round. 27 mm is big though.

    Could be Gunny, Coffman cartridge start shells used to be either 10 or 12 bore (Gauge) if I recall when we used them to start DH Chipmunks in the ATC at Ternhill back in the late 70's. Generally speaking the case was often crushed eliptically though by the engines rotation. There's one for an F4 Phantom at Cosford thats bigger than a half gallon paint tin!

    I have also seen some big casings used for starting ship emergency power generators actually.
