Box, 12 GA Brass 00 Buck; Lot W.R.A. -22005: Some Questions
FULL (opened, somewhat soiled, otherwise original) box, 2 3/4";
LABEL (craft-paper ribbon; it originally sealed the box) reads as follows:
TOP:
25 SHELLS, SHOTGUN
12 GAGE, BRASS
SMOKELESS POWDER
No. 00 BUCKSHOT
FOR USE IN HUNTING SMALL GAME
TWO ENDS (SAME):
LOT W.R.A. -22005
Head-stamp: The word WINCHESTER
(surrounding {~120 deg} primer boss);
No 12 beneath primer boss.
Crimped end: Paper insert marked with a 3/8" circle,
within which are the characters '00',
& 'B' (stacked).
I've heard about 'Sawtooth' in reference to all-brass shell crimps, but nothing here appears to answer that description.
The end of the brass cylinder, approximately one inch including and below the crimp, shows a brighter finish than the balance of the cartridge, which shows a very light 'aged' patina.
My questions:
1) Does the LOT identify a specific or range of Manufacturing years?
2) Were these issued to/used by US Military?
3) Do these cartridges represent any unusual value as collectible?
4) Since when was 00 Buckshot used for Small Game?
Thank you all for your comments and other information! wlw

WW 2 vintage US military.
Yes a full box in good condition definitely has collector value.
Geneva conventions probably prevented them from being labeled for use against enemy soldiers so they labeled them for hunting - as in survival use.

Thanks, Sarge...I love the logic! Small Game, indeed! wlw
Anyone know of recent or vintage sales similar to these? And can we pin down a year for that lot number? wlw
