Sorry guys, but you are all adrift on this one. It is 5.56m, not 7.62mm.

Look at the type number "L1A2". That is "Cartridge 5.56mm Blank L1A2" for the L85A2 rifle.

Well, if you are going to rely on Wiki.....! (sorry!)

To identify a round properly one has to look at it in its entirety. In this case the proportions are wrong for a 7.62x51mm round, plus of course the headstamp says it is an L1A2.

If it was a 7.62mm then it could only be a "Round 7.62mm Drill L1A2" ("Round" because it has a bullet) or a "Cartridge 7.62mm Grenade L1A2" ("Cartridge" because a grenade discharger does not have a bullet). It is obviously neither of these. Also, by 1995 of course the L1A1 rifle was out of service so there was no need for a grenade discharger cartridge.

Wiki is slowly getting better, but it is stil full of holes and misinformation. That is why I am trying to get my website built, although I am not up to the 7.62x51mm yet!
