Looks like a Nebelhandgranate Smoke-grenade without the wooden handle...

hmmm sorry but i,m in doubt that this is an Nebelstielhandgranate, Because of different shape of the body, and the sistem of acension is different.
Maybe had an Nebelstielhandgranate this cover on top?

It's a smoke-grenade, so no worry about shrapnel...
