Thanks for the reply . IT'S RATTY ,the stick was very dry . I use linseed oil on ,that's why its dark . and I add some wood filler on stick .That's the lighter color by the head .still have to find some small screws . Thanks again Bob

Hi Bob.. you would get a better finish using oxalic acid on the stick.. this will clean it and remove the marks. also same for the can,, this will eat the rust but leave the paint intact.
remove the metalwork and soak in warm water and keep checking it then wash and let dry,, it will turn lighter as the wood dries..
