I think the handle looks new and mine has some stencilling and a egal stamped on top ...

It's a reproduction Robert. The holes in the head show that it's trying to be an M39 smoke grenade. The smoke grenades were thoroughly marked as being smoke and not concussion, hence this one is not marked. It could be really bad to throw smoke if you were intending to kill. I am impressed by the quality of these reproductions.

I have to agree with others, the smoke grenade would have been clearly marked , in case of mistakes

Not only that but it would have had two very distinct grooves cut into the bottom of the stick, for night-time identification of the warhead charge.
