    Ned is correct.
I am in the process of building a data base of original awards which will be available to Gold members only. It is far from complete but it is a start. Other than that, you could look to purchase the books published by Phillipe DB although they do not contain fakes. If you learn what to expect from originals, you will not have to study fakes.

Actually the two book volume does does have a whole chapter on fakes, or as they are described therein "Reproductions", over 30 different types and their variants covering 45 pages in fact. It's currently available at Militaria Berlin ( Militärhistorische Antiquitäten Berlin - Christian von Eicke GmbH - Militaria Versandhandel - index/de) for 155 Euro's which is very reasonable considering what it's been in the past. Print runs are spasmodic, so it's best to pick it up when you can. It may sound expensive, but the first time it saves you from buying a fake it's paid for itself and the rest is as they say, gravy. The book is indispensable to anyone wishing to collect these awards seriously.

There are also other specialised books on medals, shields and badges published by B&D Publications that are also pre requisite for collectors of other TR baubles, although some of them are getting a bit old now and have consequently had the price lowered.

That'll get you started, a good reference library is the basis of a good collection, no doubt about that for me.
