Here is a photo of two 3.3.2 silver PAB's but with what I think are the two different finishes (Chrome like Silver and Brennlack). The one on the right I think had the Brennlack which as since been absorbed into the zinc.
Happy to be corrected.

I suspect that's exactly what has happened to my own silver example. It was combat worn, but the loss of finish is so complete that I suspect the zinc has soaked it up. Seems to be a common problem with silver badges of all types.

Yes. Typical of zinc awards. Often times poor quality zinc which only compounded the problem. That said, some types of washes held up much better.
