Re: 1936 summer olympics stamp booklet
i was asked a question by a forum member. "are tr stamps faked, they seem to sell very cheap?"
yes and no
no as a general rule most third reich stamps are not faked, they were printed in massive numbers and many many copies still exist, this makes them readily available and thusly rather inexpensive.
that being said some areas of third reich philately (stamp collecting) and stamps are highly faked !
most of the stamps themeselves being faked are the harder to find, higher dollar stamps such as the various zeppelin stamps and their overprints, these stamps range from 25.00 to 700.00 each
one thing to note, is that most (not all) third reich stamps are actually worth more used than unused (generally 5x or more of the unused price). consequently forged cancellations abound in the marketplace.
the fakers are also taking genuine stamps (usually higher valued) and applying them to period stationary and the forging various cancels and markings to make them appear legit.
a good example would be the 1931 zeppelin "polar flight" stamp. the 2 mark stamp has a value of approx 160.00 unused and 200.00 used, the same stamp used on a genuine flight cover can reach upwards of 2000.00 so as you see there is money to be made and the fakers infest the market like fleas.
2 stamp issued by various organizations of the third reich are encountered 99% of the time as fakes, very very rarely are genuine copies seen, and to have a genuine copy in your collection is a true feather in your cap.
they are: (both images shown are of GENUINE copies)
afrika corps "palmtree"
and the u-boat "hela" feldpost stamp
as with any rare or high priced item, expertization by a knowledgable specialist or authority is encouraged.
