Im a big fan of the author, his writings and the movie Das Boot.
I just had to pick up this SIGNAL magazine.

A few years ago I went by a store, which sells 'pre'loved' books.
The owner sometimes have some nice stuff.
He had a big cardboard box (the kind of size and type people use when moving). Inside were several years worth of mint SIGNAL magazines. Evidently from an estate, where someone had the good sense to sell the magazines instead of throwing them out.
I rooted through them and picked up this one, as I am nuts about Subs.
I could have bought them all as they were in goood condition and the price was right, but I didnt do it as I couldnt be bothered at the time.
    Still kicking myself.
But hey, I got a nice SIGNAL in any case!

Superb condition! Great subject matter as well! Haven't seen a lot of U Boat Signals the ones I've came across if any are usually depicting a soldier of the Wehrmacht.

Its in fine condition, yes. As were the rest in the box. Ohh, well.
Many were Army related, as you say.
I thought this interesting, as the guy who took the pic for the front page (and went on raids with a U-Boot), is the author behind DAS BOOT; Lothar-Günther Buchheim.
As a Leutnant in the autumn of 1941, Buchheim joined Lieutenant-Commander Heinrich Lehmann-Willenbrock and the crew of U-96 on her seventh patrol in the Battle of the Atlantic. His orders were to photograph and describe the U-boat in action. From his experiences, he wrote a short story, Die Eichenlaubfahrt (Lehmann-Willenbrock had been awarded the Knight's Cross with oak leaves).
He later wrote the fictional narration which is DAS BOOT.

Great find, well done! Did you know which issue of Signal had Buchheim's voyage in it or was it a purely by chance you saw his name on the cover?

Looking for LDO marked EK2s and items relating to U-406.....

    Thanks.
No, I wasnt aware which issue had Buchheims voyage in it (and still dont know because its only the Sub pic on the front. Inside there is nothing about subs at all).
I am drawn to anything Sub and noticed the Swordfish emblem on the visor cap and then the name of the Kriegsberichter. Then I just had to have it of course.
As that boat had the Swordfish as the emblem, it most likely is a pic from the conning tower of the U-96.

One of my favourite movies and certainly the ultimate U-Boat movie bar none.
    Jürgen Prochnows best role.
Did you know the young Kriegsberichter is played by Herbert Gröhnemeyer, who later went on to be an accomplished singer.
His album 'MENSCH' is quite good IMO.
