    Thanks, John....that helps.......and ties in.

The man I am researching (my wife's grandfather) was a Latvian conscripted at age 40 around Christmas 1944. The second two feldpost's would be relatives. I took the numbers from two extant letters. Both to a sister that was living in Germany. One was written on further by the sister with the two additional feldpost numbers and forwarded to my wife's grandmother. The grandmother and four daughters had fled Latvia when they were tipped off they were on a list to be deported. They were living in Lodz, Poland with another relative.

He appears to have been assigned to 23rd Nederland Division. That threw me off a bit, but have found references that the 23rd was assigned some flemish and Latvian men by this timeframe. My guess is he was with them some time in February 1945 in the 49th Regiment. My first thought he was trapped in the Halbe Cauldron, but now believe he might have been to the North when the 23rd was split in the Russian advances from april 16th-25th.

The last letter we have is undated and doesn't give a location. I suspect by the tone of the text concerning his family he was well aware the Russians had taken Warsaw and Lodz area and were close. I suspect that letter was very late February or March. If there were any later letters I suspect they failed to be delivered.

I suspect his death occurred the thew April 16-25 time period. Although we will never know I suppose. He just never appears again.

BTW the wife has a surviving Uncle who was in the Lettische 15th from late 43 on I think. I am told he never talks about the war. Another surviving Uncle was in the German SS and he doesn't speak of it either. Would love to discuss with them, but they are very old men and perhaps they want it to rest.

It's even better when there is a personal connection.

I'm sorry, i would ask them everything i could. There are not many vets left today, and each day that passes means there are less people to remember first hand.

I've just bought a collection of Feldpost letters, all different, and a hell of a lot of research to do, hoping i hit the jackpot!

Keep us informed with that one, it sounds interesting

    well done, and thanks

I am also new here, trying to find out a little bit more information about my uncle Christian Zwijnenburg, who joined the Wiki division I think and was eventually killed on 7 March 1944 in Estonia. He is buried on the German military cemetery in Rakvere, Estonia. I have a letter addressed to him with feldpostnummer 56387D, does anyone have more information on that? What I am really looking for is people who were in that same division, still alive and may have known him. I know I am a bit late :-) Possible names are Hans Broekhuis (a very common Dutch name, BTW), Frits Kupper (maybe misspelled) G. De Brand (most likely misspelled), Arthur ???, Fredrik Knutsen (definately not misspelled, lived in Oslo, Norway).

Well in any case, all suggestions are much appreciated.

    Kind regards,
