German 1939 passport...Lublin-Majdanek concentration camp

Hi,

Here is another interesting item thought of sharing...
The holder of the passport though getting a passport in 1939 was not lucky to find an exit visa out of Nazi occupied Austria.
According to records, he was transported to Lublin in 1941, where then he was gassed at Majdanek most likely around 1942...

Very sad ending indeed.

The first arrivals, used for construction detail, were Soviet POWs. They reached KL-Lublin during the autumn of 1941. Some Jewish forced labour workers, from the Lipowa St. camp in the centre of Lublin, also worked on the construction of the camp, aiding the large Soviet prisoner contingent during this initial phase. Poor health and physical condition led to the deaths of many of the POWs from this early transport - most were dead before spring 1942. It wasn't until December 1941 that the SS began to round up the first prisoners for the new camp - a group of around 150 Jews from Lublin.

The mass executions by gas did not begin until the autumn of the following year (1942), although smaller groups of victims unfit for work were killed by Zyklon-B in a makeshift chamber earlier - in the winter of 1941-42. Later, shower rooms were reconfigured and used as gas chambers. Some sources also state an additional facility was used to murder the prisoners by carbon monoxide.




The document is an interesting yet patently sad record of the man's life. Thank you for sharing this example with us all Neil, it is important to remember the events and history behind such pieces.
