Horst Wessel Sheet Music, Need Help
Anyone ever seen sheet music from the Third Reich? Picked this “Horst Wessel Song” up over the weekend at an antique swap meet. Don’t know if I over paid ($20), but I never seen sheet music before, I know it existed but it’s a first for me.
Any help on the rarity / commonalty would be appreciated.
Thank in advance,
Richard

re: Horst Wessel Sheet Music, Need Help
This song was extremely popular in the Third Reich era. ( Today, a standard 'Top 40'
piece of sheet music is about $6 or $8 ) You shoud be able to get the translated
lyrics from Wikipedia as well. The illustration on the front is taken directly from
a period photo of Horst Wessel.........

Re: Horst Wessel Sheet Music, Need Help
Hello Richard, I had this exact sheet music from Ehrler and Company of Leipzig some good many years ago. There were endless versions issued and sold of the Horst Wessel, but This one has great graphics and is very highly sought after in particular. I had mine framed and it displayed very dramatically. I sold my copy for somewhere in the $200 range and keep in mind that this was probably closer to 20 years ago or so. You paid 20 bucks? Let's just say the seller was totally ignorant of what he had and you walked away with a very good deal!
Btw...the lyrics and tune are Still banned and illegal in Germany and Austria.

Richard
William beat me to it, looks like it would display very well. $20? All day long! Search the song, it actually sounds catchy. I don't know what the lyrics say, before someone get mad at me for liking the song. LOL Great find!

The song lyrics From your link thought I would post them .... Very cool item..And welcome to the forum.
Eric
Flag high, ranks closed,
The S.A. marches with silent solid steps.
Comrades shot by the red front and reaction
march in spirit with us in our ranks.
The street free for the brown battalions,
The street free for the Storm Troopers.
Millions, full of hope, look up at the swastika;
The day breaks for freedom and for bread.
For the last time the call will now be blown;
For the struggle now we all stand ready.
Soon will fly Hitler-flags over every street;
Slavery will last only a short time longer.
Flag high, ranks closed,
The S.A. marches with silent solid steps.
Comrades shot by the red front and reaction
march in spirit with us in our ranks.

Re: Horst Wessel Sheet Music, Need Help
I love how they took "a few liberties" with the original photo....Take a look at the sheet music pic and compare it to the original...And Who could that shadowy figure be behind the flag bearer.....could it be......der Fuhrer.....? Hmm..? Funny...he didn't seem to be in the original.. lol
