Just an interesting photo I found on the web.

Note how the soldier on the left is missing the eagle from his tunic- not so for the man with the cigarette!!
I wonder what the circumstances were for that to happen?

So then, if you find a tunic with the eagle removed and think it was stripped post war .......... think again ( or, it may well be his!!!! )

    Cheers, Dan

Between eagles? Got captured, insignia taken for a trophy and released? Looks like a "bromance" moment to me ;-)

They are Russians of the POA.

Note the rank lace on the shoulder straps.

Did they wear German uniforms like this? I need to read up on them more...

Yes, they wore all German kit but with Russian style ranking.

    Search:

    Russian Army of Liberation.

    Cheers, Ade.

    Thanks Ade, I will.

Can you imagine being captured by the Russian army, being a Russian defector in a German uniform? Wowzers...

Thank you Ade - in that case I guess he wasn't going to get a bollocking from his captain for the lost 'crow' then?

    Cheers, Dan

Sometimes they wore the breast eagle, at other times not.

The history of the unit is very interesting.

In most cases such people were not taken captive. They were just immediately shot.

Default POA insignia found in Jersey, Channel Islands.

Some of you may have seen these pictures before but they fit the thread nicely. This lot all came from a house clearance, with a load of others bits and pieces. Such a shame they stripped the tunic. We had a unit of POA stationed here on the north coast. They were trusted by the Officers in charge and generally were disliked. At the end of the Occupation a Russian Officer was sent to the Island to "collect" them. I am positive they never made it home.
    All the best from Jersey,
    D
