    Default KIA Soldaten Paperwork Grouping!!!

    Good afternoon,

I am pleased to show you this family grouping of paperwork items; these items have only recently been found within an attic. It is a shame that over the years items from this grouping have not been kept together.

I saw this little lot listed as a field post lot but I did spot the Infantry Assault Badge Citation and I managed to buy the lot for £10.00 inc. postage.

I was wondering if anybody could explain the SS connection on the award citation for me please. I did try to translate one letter which is addressed to Karl Hartels wife to explain he has been killed in action in the East. In this letter it does mention that Karl trained with the SS but I was only using Google Translate and it stated to not make sense.

    Thank you, Glen.

The SS related signature is that of Werner Hörnicke who commanded Gren.Rgt 1083. He was born on 9th March 1907 in Dresden and died on 30th April 1982 in Nürnberg. At various times before commanding GR 1083 he held the following positions...
    Kdr - SS.Aufkl.Abt.18
    Kdr - I./SS-Inf.Rgt.10
    Chef - 2./SS-Inf.Rgt.8
    Chef - SS-Kradsch.Kp.51

...and he won the Knights Cross while serving with SS-Inf.Rgt 10 (1 SS-Inf.Brigade) on 1st December 1943 - so for just £10 you have bagged yourself a bargain.

According to the letter he was killed near an SS Training Camp (Truppenubungsplatz), where he was also buried...
    cheers, Glenn

KIA in August but looks like the Infanterie Sturmabzeichen was a posthumous issue seeing as it is dated for the November.

EDIT: And having said that I have now seen the note that was sent with it to the family dated for January 1945.

Thank you very much, this information is greatly appreciated!

Would it be possible to find out some further information on Karl Hartel? It is a shame there wasn't a picture of him with this grouping.

    Thank you, Glen.

Chances are no it won't be possible. If you had his Wehrpass, Soldbuch &/or Wehrstammbuch you could of deciphered a fair bit but unfortunately he was just a soldier - one amongst millions so there won't be anything available. The WASt might well hold some basic information on him (units served etc) but they will only give such information to Next Of Kin.
