One wonders, though, whether the stated cause of death (instantly killed by a headshot) was actually true.

In letters notifying a fallen soldier's next-of-kin of their relative's death as well as in the KIA entry in the deceased's Wehrpaß (which was sent to the family as a memento), direct headshots and heartshots were commonly used as the alleged cause of death even if the actual injuries were far grislier.

This was done to spare the family from additional grief and so that they could take some consolation from the belief that at least their loved one didn't suffer.
