Re: Post your death notices
The first card is interesting because of the location. Name of the place (Uryupinsk, 300 km NW of Volgograd) is funny because its a synonym of the "middle of nowhere" in Russian. The place is located on marsh land.
Some info about the camp (No 123):
-opened in 1943 after the battle of Stalingrad as a distribution camp (prisoners are were transferred to other camps from this camp)
-as of 6th of July 1943 there were 90 prisoners in the camp
-the camp experienced difficulties with food supply until early 1944 (when food supply situation in the Soviet Union drastically improved) partially due to its remoteness from the food supply bases. Prisoners were growing their own food (there were 400 HA of land dedicated to the camp for growing, there was cattle and even an apiary) to compensate for the shortages.
-there was an influx of POW in 1944/45, a lot of them with high degree of dystrophy and typhus, some 1200 POW died in January and February 1945
-some 5 800 POW are burred on the city cemetery (Germans, Italians, Romanians and Hungarians)
IMO the person on the card was not a Stalingrad prisoner but was there on the transfer

Couple new ones:
First is Martin Feigl. He was a Obergefreiter. DC says he was in a Gebirgs-Panzer Regiment, but probably a GJ Panzerjager-Abteilung. (Im guessing with 17th Armee). He was Killed on September 13, 1943 holding the Kuban Bridgehead area.
Obviously, fighting in the battle for the Caucasus in 43'. Killed in Novorossiysk (Novorossiisk), a coastal region of the Black Sea, also known for its military base/port. During the Taman Offensive, the Soviets launched an attack directly on the Harbor of Novorossiysk.....which was taken on September 16th, 3 days after Martin Feigl died. The Soviets continued major pressure throughout the Taman Peninsula (where the Kuban Bridgehead was), and finally took it in October. The remainder of the 17th Armee was able to flee to the Crimea. Sadly Martin Feigl was not with them. Martin was only 23 years old.
** The Kuban Bridgehead was important to the Germans because they wanted to protect the Eastern paths to the Crimea, and the Soviets wanted it because they saw it as a major possible launching point for another German attack on the N. Caucasus.

Re: Post your death notices
Definitely Paul! I can only imagine the feeling of trying to hold a city from blood-hungry invading troops. I mean at Nikopol, the Germans were pretty well set up for defense too....Barbed wire/dugouts/tanks/etc. Just crazy
