Q: What's in a picture ...... A: a lot of interesting things

This is a well known LIFE magazine image - part of a grouping taken in Tunisia I believe with the surrendering of a large contingent of DAK men in 1943.
sometimes we skip over these images with a causal glance but when we stop and examine them ALL SORTS of thing pop up.
Stop and look at the helmets for a moment - there are.....

Sand painted / cammo ones as well as normal.
Netting and scarves of Arabian styling ( desert insects are buggers!! )
BRITISH pith helmets!!!???
Missing / torn out? liners.....

And a good indication of what a genuine desert paint job should look like!
