    Default Reichssicherheitshauptamt ID document

    Hi all,

New to this forum (and militaria antiques), but thought I would share the first item I bought a few weeks ago. I came across this in a local antique shop specialising in militaria history.

It is the ID card of an SS officer from the Buchenwald concentration camp. I found it particularly fascinating by the number of security devices embedded in the document, such as the metal seals, embossed stampings and overall construction of the document itself.

Hope you find it as interesting as I did.

    Fake and/or fantasy imo

Hmm, that's sad if it isn't real

It wasn't particularly expensive, and since the shop is not far, I can go and discuss with the owner. A little surprising, given he is a big part of the preservation of WW2 history here in Poland, I wouldn't have expected him to make a mistake on such an item.

I guess that's what happens when you get into this stuff too eagerly, like I did

Polish market was full of fakes that were exported or sold to tourists.

Oh absolutely, I've read quite a bit on that, which is why I stay away from general for sale postings on Allegro (local auction site) and the like, and prefer to stick to antique shops who specialise in militaria. Though I am a local here And also why I went to someone who is locally recognised as someone who has a lot of knowledge on the subject.

    Live and learn I guess!

Indeed, a fantasy item typical of the Polish market.

There are loads of these fantasy items flooding the market at the moment. Here are another two examples...

All of these items are incredibly absurd fantasy pieces (they don't even deserve to be called fakes) that don't resemble any genuine SS ID document that ever existed.

The overkill of Nazi symbols and terms is as silly as the countless spelling errors.

Clearly, these things are cobbled together by fakers who don't speak a word of German and who couldn't be bothered to undertake even the most minimal research.

Incidentally, in the case of the piece in the first post, the misspellings start with Reichssicherheitshauptamt, which is missing a "t" and don't get better afterwards. (Love the phonetically-spelled "Schturmführer".) The photo of Joachim Peiper is another amusing aspect.
