    Hi guys,

I received this from a friend of mine today as an early Christmas present. They supposedly all came together. I would greatly appreciate a translation of the postcard and letter, as well as your opinions on the whole thing.

The death card is for a man who was killed while serving with a security battalion on the Eastern Front in 1944. Does it appear to be related to anything else? Is the death card a recent copy?

It all smells right, however I am no expert on paper items and I don't know if this stuff is fake. Any information would be well appreciated.

    Best regards,
    Mo

The war-dated letters look ok, but the two cards - one with English
and French on them - look new. The 'folded' card has a written
date of 1958, and also 'Gmbh' which is post-war.........

Yea, that's why I'm suspicious. I want to know if they are all somehow related, or if they are original at all.

The written date is, of course, clear enough, but just to avoid misconceptions, allow me to remark that the "GmbH" [= Gesellschaft mit beschränkter Haftung or Limited Liability Company] is no indicator for something being post-war. GmbHs had been in existance in Germany since 1892. See Gesellschaft mit beschränkter Haftung - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Alright, now for the text of the card. It was written by one lady to another; it would appear that both were teachers. It translates as:

    "Dear Marlies,
upon returning from the music workshop week at Altenberg, I found your nice card. I cordially thank you for it. Surely you have spent some nice vacation days in the mountains and caught your breath for the upcoming school year. I have now been given the 7th/8th grade of girls for the third time and am quite comfortable with it. By the way, do you still remember Miss Keggenhoff? She is now called Sister Mary Felicity O.P.* and has been in Salisbury, South Rhodesia since January. On Whitsun, we had taken her to Greenwich and I stayed there for four days in December when she was accoutered**). She is quite happy. How are you and your dear ones? Cordial greetings from your Gisela.
    "

*) O.P. = Ordo Praedicatorum, Latin for Order of Preachers; meaning she was a Dominican nun.

**) "einkleiden" literally means "to accouter"; but I'm not sure whether this is the best translation here: In this case it refers to the ceremonial bestowal of her order's habit

Now for the letter, which refers to the soldier from the death card. (Sorry, I couldn't quite figure out two of the words.) It says:

    "Den 24.9.1944

    Herr Weisensee!

Kamerad. In meinem und im Nahmen der
Kameraden spreche ich Ihnen zu diesem schweren
    Verluste unser Beileid aus.

    Heil Hitler

    ...meaning...:

    "24 Sept. 1944

    Mr. Weisensee!

It is very hard for me to have to inform you that
your son Franz Weisensee was killed in action on
    15 August 1944 at Janowize
    [...] 25 kilometers [...] of
Zwolen by a gunshot wound to the heart.
On 16 August 44, your son was taken to the Heroes' Cemetery
at Ciepielow and on the same day
was laid to eternal rest in grave no. 130
    with full military honors.
He was one of the very best, quiet and
humble, this is how we knew him.
Even though your son is no more among us,
he still lives on within us, as a good
comrade. On behalf of myself and the
comrades, I express to you our sympathies
    for this heavy loss.

    Heil Hitler

This phrase struck me as odd - "a bullet through the heart" - and i wondered is it likely to be literal, or is it a German euphemism for "died quickly and without suffering", or even a stock phrase written by an NCO who has written too many of these letters to be sincere any more?

I cannot thank you guys enough, wow, this is amazing. Thank you so much for the translations and the FP number search. I could only make out some of the words, like 'Es faellt mir sehr schwer' and I was burning to know the rest!

The letter and card and getting framed and are certainly going to be 'top shelf' for me. I am now going to spend the next hour or so reading about the whereabouts if Franz's unit.
