The gates of hell were opened and we accepted the invitation to enter" 26/880 Lance Sgt, Edward Dyke. 26th Bn Northumberland Fusiliers , ( 3rd Tyneside Irish )

    1st July 1916

Thought shall be the harder , heart the keener,
Courage the greater as our strength faileth.
Here lies our leader ,in the dust of his greatness.
Who leaves him now , be damned forever.
We who are old now shall not leave this Battle,
But lie at his feet , in the dust with our leader

I wonder if any of these guys ever had even an inkling that over 70 years later, their letters to their sweethearts and families would be being read by people all over the world...(Mostly by their former Enemies!)lol

    An interesting thought William !

I have in my collection many wartime letters and I often think that their families today would be delighted to see them. One day I may try and trace some of their descendants

    Some more.
This Wallner guesthouse still exists, as I learned on it's website, "a comfortable inn near Dachau". The modern photo is almost the same, only trees all grown up.
Just 6 km from the concentration camp, judging by Google map.

Google streetview might provide you with a similar 'now' image to make a comparison with the postcard image.
