He was an aspirant/candidate [Anwärter] in the high-grade career group of the diplomatic service.
Apparently, this was his peacetime occupation, interrupted by his wartime military service.
Officials [Beamte] were/are classed into 4 career groups requiring successively higher levels of education/qualification:
- Einfacher Dienst [lit. "simple service" or "basic service", the lowest-grade career group]
- Mittlerer Dienst [lit. "middle service" or "medium service", the mid-level career group]
- Gehobener Dienst [lit. "elevated service", the elevated career group]
- Höherer Dienst [lit. "higher service", the high-grade career group; usually requiring a university degree]

You're welcome Nick. Oh, and by the way: It's not actually an invitation, it's simply an announcement of the wedding. ["...beehren sich ihre am 9. Januar 1944 in Waidhofen an der Ybbs stattfindende Vermählung anzuzeigen" = "have the honor to announce their wedding taking place on 9th January at Waidhofen an der Ybbs"]
Note that the date of the card and the date of the wedding are identical. That would be rather short notice for an invitation...
This would have been sent to those friends, acquaintances, colleagues, distant relatives etc. who had not been invited to the actual event in order to inform them of the wedding.

Half a dozen pages of Benz , Hans , Johann etc on the Volksbund site plus 55 pages in total with the name Benz.
