The gates of hell were opened and we accepted the invitation to enter" 26/880 Lance Sgt, Edward Dyke. 26th Bn Northumberland Fusiliers , ( 3rd Tyneside Irish )

    1st July 1916

Thought shall be the harder , heart the keener,
Courage the greater as our strength faileth.
Here lies our leader ,in the dust of his greatness.
Who leaves him now , be damned forever.
We who are old now shall not leave this Battle,
But lie at his feet , in the dust with our leader

Apologies if you already know the following:

The message translates as " All men behave differently under extreme circumstances".
I can´t really decipher the meaning of the phrase beneath the signature.

Remy Schrijnen would occasionally travel from exile in Germany to attend the remembrance service for his fallen comrades held annually at Langemark cemetery on the Sunday of the Ijzerbedevaart. The visitor´s book was always removed immediately afterwards.

It says "Tapferkeits(-)Unterscharführer der Legion Flandern - Langemarck", meaning his promotion to Unterscharführer was a field promotion for bravery (as opposed to a regular promotion following time as an NCO candidate and appropriate training).

Schrijnen was promoted from Sturmmann to Unterscharführer in the autumn of 1944 following his being decorated with the Knight's Cross for conspicuous gallantry.

(By the way, he was even offered to attend officer training at the Junkerschule Tölz and become a commissioned officer, but - considering himself a working-class type and feeling not qualified to become an officer - refused. He actually had to sort this matter out with Himmler himself, who eventually condoned his decision.)
