Whats all this about?

Hi guys,

Another question, i have this photo of German troops crossing a bridge but what got me thinking was the tiny planes on the pic? i have circled them in red for you to see. What do you think they are for and why were they put there?

Looks like someones Photoshop work to me? The black is totally different in tone to the photo.

But the photo is totally original, there is a stamp on the back and the photo is correct. It also passes the light test...

Could it be a double exposure?

If the planes were photographed first on a light sky might they come out darker on a second exposure?

I don't know enough about photography to comment?

I am a published photographer, and my best opinion was already voiced - maybe it is a double exposure.
