The whole world knew in 1943, but did nothing.
Germans found the graves and informed the world.
The soviet union was the allied force, that also invaded poland on september 17th of 1939.

Although I was familiar enough with this atrocity from before I actually watched a movie about this yesterday (partially). I think it was the one simply titled Katyn... horrible stuff either way.

It was a terrible chapter in Polish history that ended with the loss of old Polish lands - Kresy and 45 years of soviet terror.
Poland lost more land in WWII than Germany as result of allied agreements with soviets.

Katyn was just one Part of the Polish officer corp and others that were massacred and buried. For Decades, no one knew or would say where the Other much larger groups were buried, but today, their locations are fairly well known or at least acknowledged. It is today admitted that Stalin had ordered 25,700 Poles to be executed. The Germans were actually appalled by the murders and were certain that They would get the blame for it and went to long lengths to show the world that the Soviets were the actual killers, but it was all for naught. They got blamed Anyway and Katyn was amongst the charges laid on them at Nuremberg. Even to this Day, there are the deniers in the former Soviet Union who vehemently refuse to admit any such thing and still loudly proclaim the guilt of the Germans. Sadly, Katyn's dead were a mere fraction of the total lost, but has always garnered the lion's share of the press and media.

The above account is seriously flawed.

The Polish goverment in exile, based in London, informed the British government, led by Winston Churchill of the Katyn massacre early in 1943. He in turn was in personal correspondence with U.S. President Roosevelt concerning the crime and Stalin's regimes likely responsibility in April 1943, a whole month before American POW's were taken to the site by their German captors to witness the discovery in May '43, and again in greater detail, including a top secret report, in August of that year.

Therefore it is fair to say that the British were aware of the facts BEFORE the U.S. was involved and both countries decided, for the sake of detente with their Soviet allies, to cover up the true facts of the atrocity committed against the Polish nation.

Here's what Wikipedia has to say:

The growing Polish-Soviet crisis was beginning to threaten Western-Soviet relations at a time when the Poles' importance to the Allies, significant in the first years of the war, was beginning to fade, due to the entry into the conflict of the military and industrial giants, the Soviet Union and the United States. In retrospective review of records, both British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt were increasingly torn between their commitments to their Polish ally and the demands by Stalin and his diplomats.

In private, Churchill agreed that the atrocity was likely carried out by the Soviets. According to Edward Raczyński, Churchill admitted on 15 April 1943 during a conversation with General Sikorski: "Alas, the German revelations are probably true. The Bolsheviks can be very cruel." However, at the same time, on 24 April 1943 Churchill assured the Soviets: "We shall certainly oppose vigorously any 'investigation' by the International Red Cross or any other body in any territory under German authority. Such investigation would be a fraud and its conclusions reached by terrorism." Unofficial or classified UK documents concluded that Soviet guilt was a "near certainty", but the alliance with the Soviets was deemed to be more important than moral issues; thus the official version supported the Soviets, up to censoring any contradictory accounts. Churchill asked Owen O'Malley to investigate the issue, but in a note to the Foreign Secretary he noted: "All this is merely to ascertain the facts, because we should none of us ever speak a word about it." O'Malley pointed out several inconsistencies and near impossibilities in the Soviet version. Later, Churchill sent a copy of the report to Roosevelt on the 13th August 1943. The report deconstructed the Soviet account of the massacre and alluded to the political consequences within a strongly moral framework but recognized that there was no viable alternative to the existing policy. No comment by Roosevelt on the O'Malley report has been found. Churchill's own post-war account of the Katyn affair gives little further insight. In his memoirs, he refers to the 1944 Soviet inquiry into the massacre, which found the Germans guilty and adds, "belief seems an act of faith."

So, there's far more to it than the above report alludes to.....As one would suspect.

Hardly breaking news as this was the central plot in the book and movie of the same name, Enigma which was released more than ten years back.

Somewhere I have an original wartime Signal magazine with an article about Katyn complete with gruesome pictures. It seems like it was an English text version. I'll have to dig it out & post some photos.
