The unusual thread title seemed appropriate in light of this fascinating poster which is included the superb book “Dla Ciebie Polsko i Dla Twej Chwaly” (For You Poland and For Your Glory).

This poster was issued in September 1939 by the new German overlords in some of the areas being annexed into Nazi Germany. This one was posted in the town of Jarocin which at the time was on the western frontier of the Polish 2nd Republic, and was soon to be administered within Reichsgau Wartheland.

Not only were the obvious things like firearms and explosives forbidden, but the Teutonic thoroughness also required the surrendering of sabers and other edged weapons, uniforms and related accessories including even seemingly harmless badges.

Here’s a quick translation. I welcome any refining of this translation, particularly the sentences immediately following the three item categories.

    Summons

Up to the date of October 1 1939 to the hour 12:00 the following must be turned into the hands of your mayor:

    1. firearms, edged weapons and explosives of all types,

    2. uniforms, uniform accessories as well as badges of the Polish army,

    3. uniforms, uniform accessories as well as badges of Polish political parties, organizations and unions,

applicable to all such items found in the hands of the population.

Whoever has knowledge of the existence of the above noted items is to inform the authorities.

If after the deadline of this order anyone remains in possession of the items that are to be turned in, or anyone hiding knowledge of such items, will be severely punished, and in the case of the category 1. will face the death penalty.

Yep, makes you think, doesn't it? The Germans are nothing if not efficient, then equally as now. Although the circumstances are different, it's kind of similar to what the Americans did to the Japanese in 1945.

Makes you wonder exactly how much has been lost...
