In many cases, military units used contract musicians in their orchestras.

I knew a man who was a read player at the age of 13 in a Horse Artillery Dyon.

Hello! I wish to ask about the Polish soldier. What award at the soldier? What regiment a sign? Excuse for my bad knowledge of English language.

    Hey there,
    Thats a very nice photo

The medal is the Cross of Valor and Im not 100% sure about the name of the badge but Ive seen it be labelled as Polish Lithuanian White Russian division badge but I think thats wrong.

This photo was taken early after the Polish-Soviet war and this soldiers wearing a wz.19 tunic and British Sams belt.

After World War 1 Poland had no official uniform so they used equiptment from all countries.

    Regards
    Emil

The badge worn by this soldier indeed is a badge of Dywizja Litewsko-Białoruska (Lithuanian-Belorussian/White-Ruthenian Division). As a matter of fact Pułk Strzelców Wileńskich (Rifles Regiment of Vilna) - the predecessor of 85 pułk strzelców wileńskich (see numbers on shoulder straps) - was one of regiments of this division.

    Hope this helps,
    MJU

PS. 265 soldiers of Pułk Strzelców Wileńskich were awarded the Krzyż Walecznych for Polish-Bolshevik War, including 8 soldiers 4-times, 7 soldiers 3-times, 32 soldiers 2-times.

    Hello Jurok,

First off, thank you Jung for the additional valuable information.

The Dywizja Litewsko-Białoruska badge, with the motto "For Our Freedom and Yours", is pictured below.

The Cross of Valour is the official government issue by Jan Knedler of Warsaw. It is the initial larger issue (44mm across). More information on these crosses can be found here:

85 Pułk Strzelców Wileńskich - 85 th Infantry Regiment from Wilno
Looks like the man was a Polish-Bolshevik war hero. The regiment took part in The Battle of Warsaw, Niemno, The battle of Bloody Forrest, they took Radzymin, Wilno, Słonimia and Baranowicze. The Regimental banner was awarded with The Virtuti Militari Medal in 19.04.1922. (sorry for my English)
    Great foto mate !
