I might try careful removal of the scabbard paint, but otherwise would leave alone.

Yes, of course, professional restoration is always an option. More often than not, when I receive that question it’s from someone who wants to play home handyman restorer and conservator. I’ve seen some good pieces get ruined. The end result in your case looks quite good. Thanks for sharing.
