Mark,
The GQ badge was given to everybody who did their first jump with a GQ parachute.
It is in fact not a military badge at all.
This badge was never an official "issued" badge worn by the Poles.
This story about the badge concerning the Poles has snowballed from Peter Taylor's misconception of the photograph he used in his book "Allied Special Forces Insignia 1939 - 1948".
The photo shows trainee paratroops who have yet to have qualified for their proper parachute badge, and thus are "showing off" to the camera with a "GQ" badge.
This was a very poor photo to use as a representation of Polish Paratroopers, showing three "scruffs".
Regards
Gary J.
