The badge looks good but ...
You can meet late Kirkwood made badges with 3-digits numbers over approx. 350 (to 500).
This is a group of badges which were not used for "Silent and unseen" and "disappeared" during a war.
All others below should be GR Tech and 4-digits numbers.
    Greetings

    Thank you
so this means that only unissued badges are of three digits?
So where does that leave us regarding this one for sale?
    Somewhere in limbo?

No, there are examples of 4 digit unissued wings.

The wings were not produced in numerical order.
The wing numbers were allocated on paper first.
Then wings were ordered as required.
Therefore, if wings from 1 to 500 were to the general staff, but only 200 wings were required for the general staff at that time, 200 were ordered numbered 1 to 200.
When the call for further general staff wings to be made .. maybe 2 years later, the order would start at 201.

Thus, in the switchover from GR-Tech to later Kirkwood, you could have a mix of manufacturers with low numbers.

As for the 4 digit unissued, .... gaps that were found in the order process were most likely later filled in for continuity reasons.

    I believe you have a copy of MAT 9 by Lory's ....
All this information is held in there.

Also, for some reason, Kirkwood unlike GR-TECH left off the "0" in any wings they produced numbered under 1000.
An assumption maybe on Kirkwoods behalf that three digit wings did not need a "0" at the lead. ?

unless one can examine every wing produced most comments / theories are speculation. wing 0042 is the archetypal GR Tech pattern, with four digits . the inescapable fact is that all the wings in the 330/500 range, approx 250 onwards range and approx 4600 onwards numerical range are Kirkwood late production with the " broken " wingtip caused by damage to the die/trimmer. Jan Lory's wing , 0504 is a GR Tech issue . it follows then that the " squeaky " ones were allocated a batch of the early numbers manufactured by GR Tech followed by a passage of time in which further wings were ordered these being Kirkwood production, GR Tech having ceased production for whatever reason. I am now off to the pub before anybody accuses me of speculating ! ipso a good Kirkwood issue with mismatched spinner. get your chequebook out !

By the way, that "325" combat wing is a total hash ... there are at least five things wrong with it ! ... which for once I'm not going to point out, as there are now plenty of references here to compare this duffer with a legit item !
