    Hello Richard,

    The Cross in the bottom right is for Horse Artillery, one of a few badges adopted before the war and awarded by the 2nd Corps.

    The only ther information that I was able to glean for you was the following :

    1) Edward Urbaniak ended the war as a St.Szer. (Lance Corporal)

    2) A Edward Urbaniak was married twice 1st to Kristina Szyc in Keeds in 1952 and then to Elzbieta Paulch in Leeds in 1967.

    That was all that I was able to find for you on the recipients my bill is in the post.

    Thank you so much for the quick reply and the information. From the number of the cross I am assuming strz Obara belonged to the 17 Lwowski Bat.

    And now for something completely different. Some years back I had the opportunity to purchase this Italian State Mint test pressing of the cross. It was part of a 2nd Corps officer's grouping. For one reason or another I (now regrettably) passed it up. It apparently now resides in a private collection in Poland. Cheers, Tony

    It was the Dix Noonan and Web Auction in 2014 that first brought these to the Market,

    Estimate: £100 - £140
    Nine: attributed to Lieutenant J. Roszek, 2rd Polish Corps

    1939-45 Star; Africa Star; Italy Star; Defence and War Medals; Poland, Cross of Merit, 1st Class without swords, enamelled, modern production; Cross of Merit, 2nd Class with swords, enamelled; Monte Cassino Cross 1944, reverse numbered ‘46 016’; Army Active Service Medal, good very fine and better (9) £100-140
    Footnote
    Jan Stanisław Roszek was born in Zakopane on 5 June 1896. During the Great War he served in Piłsudski’s 1st Brigade. In 1926 he graduated from Lwów University. Between the wars he was listed as a Reserve Second Lieutenant in the 40th Infantry. In the Second World War he was awarded the Monte Cassino Cross as Lieutenant and Doctor in the Ordnance H.Q. of the 2nd Polish Corps. For his war services he was awarded the Cross of Merit 2nd Class with swords. For some post war services of a civil nature he was awarded the Cross of Merit 1st Class. He is believed to have died in Greater London in 1972. Decorations not confirmed.

    With card forwarding box for his British medals, addressed to ‘Mr Roszek I.S., 9 Hoveden Rd, London, N.W.2’. Plus two sample strikings of the Monte Cassino Cross.

    What DNW missed was that he was awarded a Military M.B.E.

    Then a few months after this they where split up and started to appear on ebay
