I'd love it if someone could give me some information on medal number 32546. It belonged to my wife's grandfather and she's desperate for some information on him.

    Hello Stuart,

May I be the first to welcome you to the War Relics Forum, the recipient of the Monte Cassino Cross Numbered : 32546 is as follows at the time of the award:

    Rank : Kanonier (Artilleryman)

    Surname: GENYK

    Christian Name: ANTONI

    Date of Birth : 1912

Army Number: (Also found on His ID tags) : 1912-143-III

Unit : 7 Pulk Artylerii Konnej (7th Horse Artillery Regiment)

    Awarded Monte casino Cross 32546.

The 7PAK was commanded by Podpulkownik (Lieutenant Colonel) Tadeusz Anders, the younger brother of the 2nd Polish Corps Commander General Wladyslaw Anders. The 7PAK was in turn part of the the 2nd Group Artillery in the order of battle for the 2nd Corps. The Regiment took part in the Battle for Monte Cassino and in the Battle for Bologna.

I have also checked the index of victims of soviet repression with no luck in finding Antoni Genyk listed, I have also checked the London Gazette also with no luck. The only other piece of information that I was able to glean was his death in 1955 which was registered in Oswestry, Shropshire.

The Regiments commemorative Badge is shown below, I assume this is what you wanted to upload Stuart.

    Monte Cassino cross

Now apart from the Badge above Antoni would have also received the Polish 2nd Corps Badge (numbered on the reverse with Legitymacja (authorization card).

    Monte Cassino cross

Antoni would also have been awarded the Polish Army Medal (Medal Wojska)

    Monte Cassino cross

He would have also received the British 1939-1945 Star, Italy Star, 1939-1945 Defence Medal and depending on length of service the 1939-1945 War Medal.

Stuart you can apply for copies of Antoni's Service Record from the British Ministry of Defence, they do although charge £30.00p for this service if you do decide to apply be sure to ask for copies of all records they have Polish and English. Otherwise you would just receive a letter detailing his service, like the one below

    Monte Cassino cross

The M-o-D web site is here just click Requests for personal data and service records: a detailed guide - GOV.UK

Please let us know how you get on, with your search.

    Best wishes

    Andrzej

    Hi Andrzej

There seems to be an error. Her grandfather's surname was walczak. We think his first name was walter but not sure about that.
That is the badge we have so thanks for that.
I wonder if it's possible to search his name for information?
    Stuart
