    Hello Mittra,

I have searched the internet without any luck in finding a photograph of the Monte Cassino Cross Numbered 40048 awarded to Kapiatn Janusz Stypulkowski, Born : 3rd March 1901, Army Number : 1901-358-III, 301 Kompania Saperow.

The only other piece of information that I can add is that pre 1939 he served in the 3rd Sapers Regt and then was transferred to the 4th Sapers Regt, where in 1939 he was the Adjutant and smuggled the Regimental Standard out of Poland to Hungary and then onto France. Now days it can be seen in the PISM in London.

    Best wishes

i am looking for information about Franciszek (Franz) Gołaszewski (1895), son of Wojciech. I was told he was a soldier of The Polish II Corps. He was in the Mid-East and fought in Italy. He was at Monte Cassino. He came back home 1 year after the end of WW2 and died 7 years later. I couldn't find any documents about his military service in the Polish resources so far. I hope you could help me to find anything.

    Hello Klapek77,

May I be the first to welcome you to the Forum, I have checked the Register of Recipients of the Monte Cassino Cross without finding an entry for Franciszek Gołaszewski, I have checked the 3DSK Soldiers List and also the Kresy-Siberia Wall of Names and the victims of soviet repression all without any luck.

The only thing left would be to obtain a copy of his service record from the British Ministry of Defence, which they do charge for. If you decide to go down this avenue, then please ask them for copies of all records that they hold.

Link to the website is below :

Best wishes and once again welcome to the Forum

    Hello Danny,

May I be the first to welcome you to the Forum, I have checked the Register of Recipients of the Monte Cassino Cross and only found 2 Sobkowiak's listed.

    1) Plutonowy (Lance Sergeant) Izydor Sobkowiak Born in 1903, Army Number : 1903-338-III, Unit : 10BSK, Monte Cassino Cross Nr : 39484

    2) Szeregowy (Private) Marian Sobkowiak, Born in 1917, Army Number : 1917-42-III, Unit : 3KBŁącz, MOnte Cassino Cross Nr : 12801

I did however find a record on your Great Grandfather, detailing the following :

    Rank : Szeregowy (Private)

    Surname : Sobkowiak

    Christian Name : Albin Ludwik

    Date of Birth : 1st March 1923

Army Number : (also found on His ID Tags) : 1923-796-III

    Unit : 1 Kompania Sanitarna.

Your Great Grandfather although he was not at Monte Cassino, he was no doubt at other Battles that the 2nd Corps took part in, in the Italian Campaign.

The 3rd Carpathian Division took part in the following battles after Monte Cassino, Gothic Line, Pescara, Chienti River, Ancona, River Senio, Bologna, along with other minor engagements.

Danny166, the only way of find out when your Great Grandfather actually joined his Company would be to obtain a copy of his Service Record from the British Ministry of Defence. They hold the service records of soldiers of the 2nd Corps, because the 2nd Polish Corps was under the command of the British 8th Army.

Get a copy of military service records: Apply for the records of someone who's deceased - GOV.UK

The above link to the page on the M-o-D website (Gov.co.uk) explains the procedure and they do charge £30.00p, but if you do decide to go down this avenue of research be sure to ask for copies of all records that they hold otherwise you will receive a brief letter 1 or 2 pages detailing his service etc.

    Best wishes
