    Hello Andrzejku.

I have been catching up on some interesting information on this forum and would like to take the time to thank you for all the information you give out to members, but could I ask about post 3115.
You posted pictures and information about 4 recipients of the Monte Cassino cross but in the photos each one is wearing Polish Aircrew or Pilots wings, I find this very puzzling.
The top picture if I am correct shows the recipient with aircrew/pilots wings and the medal bar for Monte Cassino.
Could I ask how this is possible ?

    Thank you. Kevin

    Hello Kevin,

Many thanks for your post, if you read my post the 4 Pilots served in various Artillery Regiments when awarded the Monte Cassino Cross, but some time after the Battle for Monte Cassino. They joined 663 Polish Artillery Observation Squadron, the Pilots Gapa or wings differed slightly has shown below :

I hope that this answers your question Kevin.

    Best wishes

Kevin, some army officers (especially in artillery I believe) were cross trained as pilots in Italy and flew Piper Grasshopper reconnaissance aircraft. Extremely brave men, as the planes had no armament and were very lightly constructed.
