Polish Hat Eagles

Article about: In my opinion this particular cap eagle was made by G.J. Garratt Toronto. Very unique, hard to find.

I hope You like this post - i think it just is incredible and very symbolic find.

I was browsing the Monte Casino Cross - discussion line this afternoon - and what I have found (post 611 page 62) - has been beyond what I would have ever expected, in that context.

The post commemorates the Polish crew of which four members were killed at Monte Cassino when their tank was destroyed by mines on May 12, 1944. The fifth member, JÓZEF NIECKOWSKI, died of his injuries on May 18, 1944. Importantly and symbolically, their Tank became the 4PPanc Memorial at Gardziel of Casino.

    PPOR. BIAŁECKI LUDOMIR
    KPR. AMBROŻEJ EDWARD
    KPR. BOGDAJEWICZ EUGENIUSZ
    KPR. KARCEWICZ BOLESŁAW
    KPR. NIECKOWSKI JÓZEF

Post includes the images of NIECKOWSKI (marked by xx) with friends in Egypt 1942 care of EUGENIUSZ PIETRUSIEWICZ - 2nd POLISH CORPS 1942-1947 - courtesy of EUGENIUSZ PIETRUSIEWICZ - 2nd POLISH CORPS 1942-1947

I have enlarged the picture - as it features a number of variants of Eagles.

    1. The most importantly - the Eagle that Sp JÓZEF NIECKOWSKI had been wearing (red circle) - has never been seen to-date (according to my knowledge). It is very characteristic and unusual variant - with "wings shaped clearly as a pointing triangle with distinguishing horizontal line the wings are linking with the torso". This shape is very unusual and unknown - perhaps the Eagle was "one off - field made" but, it could well be a very rare stamped version. I would say - it is a very symbolic find given the history of the Tank Memorial!. Hopefully - over time the 2nd specimen can be fund.

    2. Secondly - yellow circle marks - known "Simplified" Eagle (featured on our forum before), that is assumed to be made in Palestine

    3. Finally - 2 green circles - unfortunately impossible to identify - but vague shapes seem to indicate some variants of small 40mm Eagle
