    Dear Tom

As you know, the field issue RAD buckle belonged to the organisation and not the man. As such, an issued field buckle was passed on to another person on the cessation of the original wearers compulsory duty and therefore, second, third and et al usage was common. That is why I think that we see some field issue RAD buckles in both a clearly tired and a clearly mint condition. The latter being held over stocks and where the organisation thought that it was unnecessary to issue and prudently to stock pile.

Persons serving were I think obviously unhappy about wearing a distressed and tired field issue buckle when walking out and hence, the opportunity of buckle manufacturers to provide a private purchase and light weight alternative. Having said that, I am not quite sure why all these private purchase walking out RAD buckles seem to be two piece by construction. Why not a die stamped aluminium example in one piece? Perhaps a cost factor and perhaps those as such without a leather tongue are the answer?

A few two piece examples though.

    Regards,

    David
