    It can hurt it, i´ve seen many helmets that took damage from oiling, although i did not try it myself, and i wont.

    P.S.
    As for the oil, I agree with the general consensus, it wasn't in dire need of any.
    Also depends on what type of oil you used as there are many different types of oil.
    I think mechanical oils like sewing machine oil shouldn't do any harm to the helmet per se, as I have an old Pfaff sewing machine from the 1920s which I managed to get up and running again and the oil doesn't make anything corrode or destroys paint, it does help to remove dirt and light rust from metal.
    But I have never used it on helmets and so far never had one that would've needed it.
    It's always best to leave 'em as is
