It could well be a M40 - hard to tell with the vent damage but it doesn't look like popped vent ferrules to me ( I can see a raised ridge which indicates M40 production.) I don't understand the 'mp' in your title though?

Ahh I see it now - strange that - could be many explanations.....

    1) Captured soldier put to work or Field Police after the surrender.
    2) someone having fun at the time and then discarded
    3) a well crafted fake
    4) One of 'Monty Pythons' old helmets ..... ( just kidding )

    Quite strange though .....

Possibly one of the German Feldjagern (chainhunden) assigned to work with US MPs after the cessation of hostilities? The FJ gorget would be recognizable to the Germans and "MP" would be recognizable to the GIs.
Which I see Danmark has already suggested... great minds think alike, I see. You're obviously a man of discerning nature, Dan.

The relic condition doesn't make much sense for something used after the end of the war (even for a few weeks or months).

? If it was disposed of after use then dug up years later then it will be relic.

And Cammobunker, thanks but while I've been called many things Discerning isn't one of them. :-)

I also think it was a Feldjagern helmet. Jim G.
