Re: Relic Helmet, M42?
Looks like pick axe damage. It is an M42.

Re: Relic Helmet, M42?
Wahey! Im learning!
I agree, the only way you'll ever know what the damage is, is if you were there when it was damaged in the first place!
Thanks

Re: Relic Helmet, M42?
I was going towards the shrapnel damage in my honest opinion but that's probably me just being hopeful. Either way im happy

Re: Relic Helmet, M42?
Very square holes for shrapnel. I'd say axe too. And M42.

I think it too.

Re: Relic Helmet, M42?
I will say shrapnel. I have no knowledge of diggers using pick axes. Not here anyway. Too heavy to carry around. Let's just say you got a good big signal on your detector, would it be clever to just thump away with a pick axe? It's not from a pick axe. I have seen lots of this type of battle damage

Re: Relic Helmet, M42?
Do you know where it was found Vicky?
I would say pick axe too. It doesn't have to be the person who dug it up who put the damage into it. It's had 71 years to accrue this damage and being as it was underground there is a very good chance anyone or anything in that time could have damaged it.
It may have been dug up from a building site or even from someone's garden 30 years ago and sat in a shed for 41. There are many possibilities.
Looking for LDO marked EK2s and items relating to U-406.....
