    Default Artillery Shell Folk Art

My grandfather, who served in WW2 (and WW1), sent these artillery shell items back home from Europe at the end of WW2. I'm not sure what they were suppose to be used for, but the larger shell has 4 French (I think) coins attached to it with dates of 1937 and 1938. The bottom of the larger shell shows a 1942 date. The smaller shell has one French coin and one Middle Eastern coin attached to it. There are a lot of numbers on the bottom of the smaller shell, but I can't make out a date, although I do see a small ship's anchor. My question is what can I do to remove the corrosion seen on the smaller shell? I assume this is brass.
