Default Heer Infantry NCO Waffenrock Restoration

    Hi guys,

Yesterday I received my very first original tunic. It is a waffenrock for a Heer infantry Unteroffizier.

Here it is on my wall as it came, stripped. That's right, it's a naked waffenrock!

As you can all see, it is missing its tresse, collar tabs, and breast eagle. The sew-in style shoulderboards have also been ripped out, although they are still present.

Luckily, the idiot who ripped all of the insignia off decided to keep it with the waffenrock and pass it on, where it has, as of 2012, found its way into my collection. I will be reattaching these items over the next couple of weeks.

Here is all of the insignia, as well as the thread that I bought to sew on the eagle. Which color of green thread do you like better? The blueish-green thread actually more closely matches the original thread that was used, but it looks too bright to me. Opinions?

Hi Mo. It looks better just adding the belt ! Is the thread cotton
or rayon, and does it glow ?

I like the darker stuff that will match the insignia
    and the old original thread.........
    Regards,

    Steve.

I like it better, too. I actually found some original thread for sale, but I didn't want to use old thread and then have someone run a blacklight test on it and have it not glow and think that the thread was original. I do not want to deceive anyone, even if it is accidental, and even if I'm not going to sell it.

However it is polyester, not cotton. Would it be a better idea to use untreated cotton thread instead? Will chemical-filled polyester thread damage the insignia over time?

I wouldn't get that 'deep' into it. You'll be fine with what you have,
and I can see your reasoning behind the modern thread too !

Wonder why the guy stripped it in the first place - Was he trying
to make it into something other than what it is ?

( You were also going to show us the 'TON' of other
    stuff you got.........)
    Regards,

    Steve.

Oh yea, I'll post it on the other thread so that I don't get this one off-topic.

If I were you and had the option, I would use original thread. I am a believer that you try to restore it to as close to original as possible. If you decide to sell, you should disclose the details to the prospective buyer anyways. I would not intentionally make it show up under black light.
