Iron Cross, possible restoration?

Hello!

A good friend turns 30 in a few weeks. I am thinking of buying this iron cross and give it to him as a birthday present.
Is it possible to do something about the rust? Should I leave it as it is?



Excuse my bad english and my lack of knowledge, but I've read a lot in this forum now and realize that this is a very large portion of knowledge here. So I have to ask you.

I think if you do nothing, it will continue to rust.
If this were mine, I would take a soft toothbrush and very gently remove any
loose rust on the surface of the core. Then I would soak the cross overnight
in a very light machine oil or penetrating oil. Then it dry completely. I would try
not to rub or wipe it if possible.

I'm sure others may have better ideas, but this way would hopefully stop the rust
and not affect the appearance too much.

Don't waist your money. It will never be worth much. There is no way to make it a good one. It will always be a piece of junk.
Buy a good one in good shape from a reputable dealer.

As said you can get one much better for not a bunch of money but if it is very cheap go for it. I assume it is for a new collector and I also assume they would be very happy with any form of a military award (I know I would have been).
Even in this state I think it would stay about the same for a extened period of time if kept in a tempture and moisture controlled environment but some oil would not hurt.

Steve is correct in that it will never be worth much but I would not go so far as to

To call it junk, I think is wrong, sure it could have been in better shape but I think it has its charm.

Got it for around $ 45.

I read in another thread of white vinegar. Should I try it, or does that make more harm than good?
Otherwise I will try the oil.

In my opinion it was a bit expensive for a EK2 in that condition maybe more like $20-$25.
Though it is a nice thought to buy it for your friend!
